Kerala destination weddings
Backwaters, beaches and tea hills, planned from our home in Kochi.
Updated Kalyan Co Planning TeamReviewed by Mefas Fransis

A Kerala destination wedding usually means a lakeside resort in Kumarakom or Alleppey, a beach in Kovalam or Varkala, or a heritage home in Fort Kochi. The best months are September to March. For 150 guests over three days, expect roughly ₹42.4–92.8 lakh (about US$44,000–97,000) with Kalyan Co planning it end to end.
Kerala is where Kalyan Co is based, and it is one of the easiest places in India to host guests from abroad: an international airport at Kochi, English spoken almost everywhere, and resorts built around water. Couples come for the backwaters, where a ceremony can happen on a lakeside lawn or on a slow houseboat, and for the beaches of the southern coast.
Kerala weddings are famously unhurried in spirit and efficient in practice. A traditional Hindu ceremony can take under half an hour, a Christian wedding centres on the church, and the feast (the sadya, served on a banana leaf) is the part guests remember. We build a weekend around those moments: a welcome dinner, a mehndi afternoon, the ceremony, and a reception by the water.

Getting your guests to Kerala
Most guests from Europe, North America and Australia reach Kochi with one stop, usually through Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha or Singapore. Flights from the Gulf are direct and take about four hours. We meet every guest at the airport; the lake resorts are 90 minutes to two hours away by road, and the Kovalam coast is closest to Trivandrum airport.

When to have a wedding in Kerala
| Months | Weather | Our view |
|---|---|---|
| September–November | Green after the monsoon, 24–31 °C, some evening showers | Lush and good value. Keep a covered plan for October–November showers. |
| December–February | Dry and warm, 22–32 °C | Peak season: the best weather and the highest rates. Book 9–12 months ahead. |
| March–May | Hot and humid, up to 35 °C | Beach and hill venues with evening functions. |
| June–August | Southwest monsoon, heavy rain | Covered venues only. Many Kerala Hindu families avoid the month of Karkidakam (mid-July to mid-August). |

Ceremonies, customs and local rules
Ceremonies
- Kerala Hindu ceremonies are short and set to a muhurtham, an auspicious time chosen from the calendar, often in the morning.
- Kerala Christian weddings take place in church; tying the minnu and giving the manthrakodi saree are the central rites.
- Kerala Muslim weddings centre on the nikah, followed by a reception; families from Malabar often add oppana, a celebratory song and dance.
- Civil-style and fusion ceremonies are common at resorts. Lighting the nilavilakku, the tall brass lamp, is how Kerala opens any good beginning.
Rules and permissions
- Amplified music outdoors normally ends at 10 pm; indoor spaces can run later.
- Choose a resort with a bar licence if you want an open bar.
- Beach ceremonies need the resort’s permission and sometimes the local authority’s; we arrange both.
- Drones need registration and local permission; we handle it.
Kerala wedding questions
How much does a destination wedding in Kerala cost?
For 150 guests over three days at a 4-star resort, expect roughly ₹42.4–92.8 lakh (about US$44,000–97,000), including rooms, food, venue, décor, photography, music, guest care and our planning fee. Intimate weddings of 50 guests start far lower; use the cost calculator for your own numbers.
What is the best time of year for a wedding in Kerala?
September to March. December to February is the driest and busiest; September to November is greener and better value, with some evening showers. Avoid June to August for outdoor ceremonies.
Which airport should our guests fly into?
Kochi (COK) for Kumarakom, Alleppey, Fort Kochi and Munnar. Trivandrum (TRV) for Kovalam and Varkala. Both have direct flights from the Gulf.
Can foreigners get legally married in Kerala?
Yes, under India’s Special Marriage Act, which requires notice to the local Marriage Officer after one partner has lived in the district for at least 30 days. Most couples from abroad marry legally at home and hold their ceremony in Kerala.
Can we get married on a houseboat?
For small groups, yes: a houseboat ceremony or cruise suits up to about 30 people. Larger weddings hold the ceremony on a lakeside lawn and use houseboats for arrivals, portraits or a sunset cruise.
Can we have a fusion or Western-style ceremony in Kerala?
Yes. Resorts host civil-style ceremonies every season, and couples often add Kerala touches: garlands of jasmine, lighting the nilavilakku, chenda drummers and a sadya.
How far ahead should we book?
Nine to twelve months for December to February, and six months for the rest of the season.
What is a sadya?
A traditional Kerala feast of twenty or more vegetarian dishes served on a banana leaf in a set order, from banana chips and pickles to rice, curries and payasam for dessert.
